The impact of domestic cats on birds

News - Intro image

Predation by cats is a major cause of mortality amongst birds as well as small mammals such as mice, shrews and young rabbits. Did you know that every year, between 100-350 millions of birds are killed by cats in Canada?

Dangers threatening cats… threatening birds

You can hit two targets with one shot by protecting both the fauna and your cat at the same time. By keeping your beloved cat indoors or by walking him/her on a leash or with a harness instead of allowing kitty to wander freely outside, you are protecting your furry friend from getting…

-        lost;

-        stolen;

-        hit by a vehicle;

-        exposed to diseases and viruses;

-        hurt by other animals;

-        harmed by an ill-intentioned person.

The importance of protecting birds

By protecting your cat like so, you are lending a helping hand to birds, known to ensure a natural pest control and play an active role in the rehabilitation of forests through seed dispersal while delighting amateur birdwatchers on a daily basis. Genuine nature sentinels, birds are also accurate indicators of the environmental health.

Got it for Kitty, but what about Puppy?

It is also recommended to walk your dog on a leash, because the scent will scare wildlife. Moreover, remaining in control of your dog will ensure you that he or she will stay on the trails during walks in the forest, therefore reducing the risks of trampling over a nest (some bird species nest on the ground) or an occupied borrow. Also, let’s not underestimate the natural instincts of dogs, which leads them to chase small animals encountered in the woods. That is right: in natural environments, your pooch becomes a predator upsetting the ecosystem.
