This afternoon, the CRE de Laval team was present at the press conference held by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) at Vélo Québec in the presence of the Minister, for a major announcement: an investment of $3 million to support initiatives that promote active transportation in Quebec.

We are thrilled to announce that our project Vélocité is one of the five initiatives selected and will receive financial support of $445,000!

Vélocité: Promoting Cycling in Laval

For several years now, the role of bicycles in our cities has been steadily evolving. In Laval, we want to actively contribute to this transformation. Through Vélocité, our goal is to encourage cycling among residents and organizations, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation.

This project is based on two main components:

  • Supporting businesses, retailers and institutions (ICI) in adopting sustainable mobility practices by guiding them toward the Bicycle-Friendly certification from Vélo Québec. This will help improve bicycle accessibility for employees and visitors of these organizations.
  • Organizing an annual cyclovia event, during which residents can reclaim urban space and ride freely on roads temporarily closed to cars. These festive and inclusive events aim to raise awareness and promote the use of bicycles as a daily means of transportation.

Essential Support for Active Transportation in Quebec

The ECCC announcement didn’t stop there. We were delighted to learn about the other funded projects, all equally inspiring:

  • “Toutes à vélo” – Vélo Québec: a cycling education program by and for women, aimed at promoting gender equity in cycling.
  • Locomotion: a self-service lending program for cargo bikes in public spaces, such as libraries.

Vivre en Ville and the CRECQ: two other organizations that will benefit from this financial support for their sustainable mobility initiatives.

We warmly congratulate all the committed actors involved in this transition towards more sustainable and accessible transportation options!
