Trees to combat flooding and urban heat islands

News - Intro image

An abundant canopy is essential for regulating the temperature of outdoor spaces. Did you know that a healthy tree canopy can reduce temperatures by 2 to 10 degrees Celsius compared with a paved, treeless street?

This temperature-regulating role is all the more important today, as heat waves are becoming increasingly intense and prolonged. Vulnerable people, such as seniors and children, are particularly at risk of suffering from these conditions.

But that’s not all: by absorbing water, trees also help prevent flooding and sewer overflows, which in turn cause pollution in waterways. In Laval, however, soil mineralization is a growing problem, especially as episodes of heavy rainfall worsen rapidly.

Planting a tree is therefore more than an aesthetic preference; it’s an inexpensive, natural, low-maintenance solution. A tree can improve the quality of life of property owners and, when part of a sufficiently large canopy, benefit all residents of a neighborhood.
